Classical Tutorials: Supplementing the home-school education of middle school youth using the classical approach. Updated (6.7.2016).
Our program is specifically designed for those fantastic middle-school years from ages 11-14, the time in-between childhood and young adulthood. Our tutorials are based on the suggestions outlined in The Well Trained Mind by Susan Wise Bauer. Never heard of her? That is okay. If you have never used a classical curriculum, it's not too late to start! We subscribe to a practical classical approach.
We currently offer classes in Latin, logic, writing, French, biology, chemistry, physics, and history. Classes meet once a week on Fridays at Biltmore United Methodist Church in Asheville. On these Fridays students attend classes and during lunch play on the playground, run around during a game of perpetual tag, or just sit and talk with friends. The tutors assign homework to be completed during the rest of the week. This structure encourages students to develop the skills needed to manage their time and schoolwork. New this year is our afternoon module option, Explore Experience Expand. These learning modules provide opportunities for students to Explore interests, Experience new activities, and Expand abilities. We offer modules in drama, art, game design, and digital art. Students finish each 8-week session with a time to share their performances, newly acquired skills, art pieces, or dramatic interpretations at a lunchtime exhibit. New sessions offered quarterly.
